Mercer County man pleads guilty to robbery charge in January beating

PRINCETON, W.Va. — A Mercer County who was allegedly involved in the beating of his elderly mother pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree robbery.

Wayne Hartley, 44, of Bluefield, entered a guilty plea and now faces 40 years in prison.

Hartley and his girlfriend, Angela Graham, 41, of Bluefield, were arrested in January for the beating of 81-year-old Patricia Hartley.

Graham beat Patrician Hartley with a marble rolling pin before pushing her down a flight of stairs. She then hit her with a baseball bat and cut Patricia Hartley’s wrist with a paring knife.

Wayne Hartley allegedly was aware of the attack but did nothing.

According to the Bluefield Police Department, the motive was to steal Patricia Hartley’s debit card and use it to purchase drugs.

Graham pleaded guilty in May to attempted murder and first-degree robbery charges. She was sentenced to three to 15 years for attempted murder and a 60-year sentence for robbery.

Wayne Hartley is set to be sentenced in November.
