Hardy County school superintendent dies of gunshot wound

MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — The superintendent of schools in Hardy County died at his home this week after suffering a single gunshot wound. No foul play is suspected, investigators said.

Dr. Matthew Dotson, who began as Hardy County superintendent in April 2016, was found dead in his Moorefield home Wednesday at about 3 p.m. The Moorefield Police Department is investigating.

The Hardy County Board of Education released a statement extending condolences to Dotson’s family.

“Personnel is in place at the central office to assume temporary responsibilities of the superintendent and they are confident the operation of the schools will continue as everyone deals with the loss of Dr. Dotson,” the statement said.

The state Department of Education also released a statement:

“We join the education community in mourning the loss of Dr. Matthew Dotson, Superintendent of Hardy County Schools. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, students and colleagues. Dr. Dotson was a passionate leader and cared deeply about our students. (State) Superintendent (Steve) Paine has spoken with Hardy County Schools to express condolences and offer any support needed during this difficult time,” the statement said.

Further circumstances surrounding Dotson’s death have not been released.
