North Carolina State quarterback Ryan Finley (15) runs for 46 yards as Marshall defensive back Brandon Drayton (8) pursues during the first half at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The Herd went toe-to-toe with N.C. State in the first half, but second-half penalties caught up to Marshall and the Wolfpack won the game 37-20. A breakdown of the scoring:

FIRST QUARTER

N.C. State: Carson Wise 31-yard field goal (10:19)
The Wolfpack’s first offensive play was a 46-yard keeper by quarterback Ryan Finley. After a sack by Marshall linebacker Artis Johnson put N.C. State in a third-and-13 situation, Wise made the kick.
N.C. State leads 3-0

Marshall: Chase Litton 1-yard touchdown throw to Willie Johnson (3:45)
Like last week’s 98-yard drive against Miami (Ohio); Tyre Brady was almost single-handedly responsible for moving Marshall downfield. Brady started with a 33-yard catch, and then converted a third-and-12 by gaining 15. Another 25-yard catch just two plays later put the Herd on N.C. State’s 3. A booth review resulted in Willie Johnson being credited for a tough sideline catch for the 1-yard touchdown.
Marshall lead 7-3

Marshall: Kaare Vedvik 33-yard field goal (3:09)
A 53-yard rush by Keion Davis put Marshall to the edge of the red zone, where it settled for a field goal.
Marshall leads 10-3

Second Quarter

Marshall: Kaare Vedvik 45-yard field goal (8:20)
Starting on their own 16, Marshall faced an early third-and-11 when Brady came through again with a 38-yard catch. Another big pass from Litton to Willie Johnson put the Herd on N.C. State’s 30-yard line, where they ultimately settled for another field goal.
Marshall leads 13-3

N.C. State: Ryan Finley 24-yard pass to Stephen Louis (5:26)
The Wolfpack’s offense finally showed signs of life with passes of 16 and 24 yards. Nearing the red zone, a screen pass to Louis and two missed tackles resulted in a big touchdown to energize N.C. State.
Marshall leads 13-10

Marshall: Chase Litton 75-yard touchdown to Tyre Brady (5:07)
It didn’t take Marshall long to answer. After a decent kickoff return to the 25 yard line by Marcel Williams, Tyre Brady ran a short comeback route and broke a tackle attempt by the cornerback covering him. Brady turned on the burners and wasn’t touched as he ran down the field 75 yards. Marshall leads 20-10
N.C. State: Finley 39-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Samuels (2:05)
The Wolfpack offense methodically drove the ball down the field. On Marshall’s 40, they dug deep into the playbook and got tricky. Finley handed the ball off to his running back, who pitched it to a receiver reversing the field, only for the receiver to pitch it back to Finley resulting in a flea flicker. Finley found a wide-open Samuels behind Marshall’s secondary for a 39 yard touchdown pass.
Marshall leads 20-17

N.C. State: Finley 34-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Harmon (0:16)
It looked like Marshall would hold N.C. State to a three-and-out before halftime, but an overly aggressive Rodney Allen committed pass interference on third-and-7. Then came another 16-yard catch by Harmon, and a 14-yard run by Reggie Gallaspy before Finley’s deep touchdown throw put the Wolfpack ahead. The extra point was no good.
N.C. State leads 23-20

Third Quarter

N.C. State: Gallaspy 1-yard touchdown run (7:58)
After Marshall committed a pass interference on a third-and-15, the Wolfpack capitalized and marched to the goal line. The Herd defense stood tall for three plays but N.C. State went for it on fourth down at the 1 with Gallaspy surging in.
N.C. State leads 30-20

Fourth Quarter

N.C. State: Gallaspy 23-yard touchdown run (3:58)
After a fumble by Trey Rodriguez at the Herd’s 23-yard line, N.C. State punched it in with Gallaspy taking the ball up the gut for the insurance score.
N.C. State leads 37-20
