Independence High mourns loss of teacher

BECKLEY, W.Va. — The Raleigh County Board of Education has confirmed a teacher was found unresponsive in her Independence High School classroom Monday morning.

The school board announced early Monday the school, located in Coal City, would dismiss at 11:30 in the morning.  Raleigh County Schools Superintendent David Price confirmed in a statement shortly after 1 p.m. Monday that a teacher had passed away at around 8:10 a.m.

“It’s a sad day for Raleigh County Schools and the Independence High School Family,” Price said.  “This teacher will be greatly missed by all.”

Price also said the teacher died from a medical condition.  Trained medical professionals and first responders acted immediately.  She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The teacher’s identity has not been released.

School counselors are available to provide grief counseling for students, parents and faculty.
