UC’s Kirkland hospitalized after suffering medical episode

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — University of Charleston football coach Pat Kirkland suffered a medical episode over the weekend and won’t be able to coach for a few weeks, a university spokesman confirmed Monday.

Kirkland is hospitalized in Morgantown. Specifics regarding his medical leave were not released.

UC offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Paul Johnson will fill in for Kirkland during the interim.

Charleston (1-1) visits West Liberty on Thursday.

The school expects Kirkland to return to work this season, said Dave Traube, the school’s communications director.

Kirkland is in his seventh year as head coach, leading the Golden Eagles to a 42-27 record and their first Division II playoff bid. He previously spent five seasons on the staff at West Virginia.
