Southern Report: Week 4

By Fred Persinger II for WVMetroNews.com

Hurricane (2-1) at Beckley (1-2)

Beckley will try to bounce back after a disappointing loss last week to Bluefield. The Flying Eagles turned the ball over four times, leading to 24 Bluefield points as the Beavers stayed unbeaten, 45-13.

Beckley did welcome back running back Micah Hancock to the team who rushed for over 100 yards in his first full game of the season. And the special teams came up with two big plays — a blocked punt, which led to a score, and a blocked field goal.

Bluefield was once again led by Kennedy Award and MetroNews Player of the Year candidate Mookie Collier who rushed for 134 yards on just 11 carries. As a team, Bluefield rushed for over 250 yards on the night.

This week, Beckley is back at home for the third straight game, welcoming the Hurricane Redskins to town. Hurricane is 2-1 on the season and ranked 12th in the WVSSAC playoff rantings. The Redskins are coming off of a 41-21 loss to Cabell Midland as the Knights gained over 400 rushing yards, led by Ivan Vaughn’s 278 yards and four total touchdowns.

This will be the 6th meeting between the two teams as Hurricane holds a 4-1 advantage. The line win for Beckley came back in 2012. Last year, the Redskins beat the Flying Eagles 41-0.

It will be homecoming for Beckley with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

The game can be heard on the Big Dawg 99.5 WJLS, online at WJLS.com and on the iheart radio app.

Wyoming East (1-2) at Oak Hill (3-0)

For the first time since 2013, Oak Hill is 3-0 on the season. Last week, the Red Devils defeated Mount View 41-16.

Oak Hill has been led all season by Khori Bass who has put up some great numbers through the first three weeks. Bass has rushed for over 200 yards in all three games this season, including 246 yards against the Golden Knights. Overall, he has 734 yards rushing and nine touchdowns. Oak Hill forced five turnovers a week ago in that win over Mount View.

Wyoming East, meanwhile, holds losses to Fayetteville (38-19) and Nicholas County (42-0), with a win over rival Westside, 12-10.

It will be the Hall of Fame game for Oak Hill with kickoff set for 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Summers County (1-1) at Mount View (2-1)

Summers County and Mount View both find themselves right in the middle of the early Class A playoff picture as the first WVSSAC ratings have been released. Mount View is No. 11, while Summers County is No. 12.

Summers County is coming off a 26-12 win over Class AA Shady Spring last week. The Bobcats were led in that contest by backup quarterback Tucker Lilly who stepped in for starter Tim Persiani following an injury early in the game.

Lilly ran for 85 yards and threw for another 63 yards to help secure the win. Summers County’s defense stepped up as well, forcing four Shady Spring turnovers and holding the Tigers to 137 yards rushing and under 200 yards of total offense overall.

Mount View, meanwhile, is coming off a tough loss to Oak Hill from last week. Mount View’s high powered offense was held in check, limited to just 81 rushing yards in the game. Still, quarterback Elijah Collier threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns on 13 of 22 passing.

Summers County and Mount View will battle in Welch Friday night with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
