Carrollton Bridge reopens following arson fire

CARROLLTON, W.Va. — Traffic is moving again along the Carrollton Covered Bridge in Barbour County.

The bridge, located on county Route 36, was shutdown last month after an arson fire damaged the bridge. The state Department of Transportation repaved the road since then and reopened it to traffic on Thursday.

The blaze occurred on Aug. 10. The state Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was initially set along with two other fires at nearby fishing camps on the Buckhannon River.

Most of the fire damaged the upper structure of the bridge. It’s unknown what the next step is in restoration efforts.

The bridge was built in 1856.
