FAIRVIEW, W.Va. — ERP Environmental Fund laid off 59 coal miners at its ERP Federal No. 2 Mine in Marion County earlier this week, the United Miners Workers Union confirmed Friday.

ERP notified the miners Friday, Sept. 8, that the layoffs would take effect this past Monday. The mine was idled last weekend.

The company told the UMWA the layoffs were based on market conditions and the geological condition of the mine. The mine has been operating this week. There remain approximately 190 union workers there.

The Federal No. 2 is a deep mine located near Fairview in northern Marion County near the Monongalia County line.
