WASHINGTON, D.C. – Albert Andres-Llop’s hot streak continued with a goal and an assist continued as West Virginia downed American 3-0 in men’s soccer on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (5-1-2) scored twice during a three-minute span of the first half, and goalkeeper Stephen Banick made two saves to shut out American (1-6-1).
Freshman Tom Shepherd gave West Virginia the lead at 20:04, scoring his first goal a header off a free kick by Andres-Llop.
Two minutes later Andres-Llop made it 2-0, drawing a pass from Jad Arslan and scoring from 6 yards out. It was the fourth goal on the three-game road swing for Andres-Llop.
“We jumped out to an early lead, and it’s the first time in a few games we’ve been able to do that,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “That’s been a focus of ours the last couple of days in preparation. Getting back to, one, scoring the first goal and two, getting the shutout. We were able to accomplish both today.”
The lead swelled to 3-0 in the 53rd minute. Sebastian Garcia-Herreros tracked down a ball in the far corner and sent it in to Lucca Barbaris, who’s first shot hit the post. From his back, the sophomore Barbaris connected on the rebound for the first goal of his career.
