With Mountaineers away, Morgantown comes out to play for Family Weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Mountaineers may be on their way to Lawrence, Kansas for Saturday Big 12 matinee, but Morgantown may still look like the site of a home game day this Saturday.

“We’re blessed for it to be the Fall Family Weekend,” Greater Morgantown CVB Executive Director Susan Riddle said Friday on Morgantown AM. “And with the families that are coming in to experience town, there’s lots for them to do.”

The weekend features the Arts Walk Friday night in downtown Morgantown, sponsored by the CVB, Main Street Morgantown, Monongalia Arts Center, and Arts Monongahela. Local artists will showcase their work at a number of local businesses. There will also be live music at 123 Pleasant Street, the 400 Block of High Street, and at seven other locations total. On Saturday, traffic alterations wil begin early. More than 1,000 runners are slated to race in all three races of the Morgantown Marathon.

“It’s going to work out much, much better because it’s all on one day,” Riddle said.

Shuttles will begin running at 5:00 a.m. from the Monongalia County Baseball Stadium. The Morgantown Marathon will begin at 7:00 a.m., the Morgantown Thirteener will start at 7:15 a.m., and the Mountain Mama 8K at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning. More than 1,000 runners are registered, and same-day registration will be available Saturday morning.

“The Marathon has continued to build each year,” Riddle said. “We attempted this year to really challenge in working with the race to see if we could get representation from all 50 states.”

The busy weekend also includes the 24th West Virginia Wine & Jazz Festival at Camp Muffly, Hops on the Mon at the Morgantown Marriott Waterfront Place Hotel, and home matches for WVU Men’s Soccer and Volleyball.

“We’re really appealing to a lot of different audiences,” Riddle said. “I mean, it’s great that the families come in from Morgantown — they have a lot to pick from. Hopefully everyone will get out in the beautiful fall weather and have some fun.”

The weather is expected to vary at times between patchy fog in the mornings and hot, humid days with high temperatures into the 80’s. Temperatures will rise rapidly during the course of the Morgantown Marathon, according to the hourly forecasts.

Sunday’s high is currently 89, which would tie the record high for September 24 set in 2010.
