Tired WVU wins on Kellogg’s goal with 28 seconds left

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Ryan Kellogg scored the game’s only goal in the 90th minute to send West Virginia to a 1-0 win over Dayton on Saturday night in men’s soccer.

Kellogg’s first career goal came with 28 seconds remaining in the match and the only shot on goal for the Mountaineers (6-1-2), who won their third straight.

Dayton fell to 3-5-2.

The game-winner began with a free kick from midfield by junior goalkeeper Stephen Banick. Inside the box, the Dayton defense headed it out, right to Kellogg. The ball bounced off his chest, he dribbled once, and from the edge of the box sent a ball in.

“It might have been exciting for a lot of others, for me it was really frustrating,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “For my team it was really frustrating. We didn’t play well tonight.

“I think we looked like a team that’s played a lot of games in a short amount of time. All that said, to not play our best and still find a way to win the game was really good. That Dayton team was the better team on the evening, but at the same stage, we have to give my kids a lot of credit for being resilient and finding a way to win the game.”

It was West Virginia’s fourth of five games in a 14-day span.
