What Will It Take?

As we enter week number six of the high school football season, there are a lot of teams that are very close to passing the point of no return!  Going back to last season, in Class AAA, we had only one team with an unblemished record and only one team with one loss.  However, in last year’s field of sixteen, we did have two teams make the playoffs with five losses.  This season though, no coach can be comfortable if they reach that five loss plateau, because just in case you forgot, we did have two other teams last season with five losses that did not make the field of sixteen.  It all goes back to be careful who you play during the regular season!  Now looking at the halfway mark this season, we currently have four teams with an unblemished record, three teams with just one loss and nine teams with just two losses.  Add that up and our field of sixteen is complete!

What do the numbers look like in the other classes?  In Class AA last year, we had three undefeated teams and three teams with just one loss make the playoff field of sixteen.  We also had three teams with just two losses, five teams with only three losses and we did have two teams make it into the field of sixteen with four losses.  We also had one team with a 6-4 record that did not get in the playoff field.  This season so far, Class AA looks even tougher!  Entering week number six, we have four undefeated teams, fourteen teams with just one loss and seven more with only two losses.  In Class A, last season we had fourteen of the sixteen playoff teams with three losses or less and the other two playoff teams had a record of 6-4.  Once again however, there was a 6-4 team that did not get in.  This season, Class A is almost a mirror image of Class AA.  Entering week number six, there are seven undefeated teams in Class A, five teams with just one loss and eight teams with only two losses.

Now, I am fully aware the season is not over and a lot of things can, and will, change!  However, if your favorite team already has three losses, the time to win is now!

What does week number six look like?  In Class AAA, one of the more intriguing games will find (3-1) Spring Valley making the trip to Hurricane to take on the (3-1) Redskins.  Also, (2-3) Morgantown will head back to the eastern panhandle to take on another undefeated team in the (4-0) Musselman Applemen while the undefeated (5-0) University Hawks will make the long trip south to battle a resurgent (3-2) St. Albans team.  In Class AA, (4-0) Liberty Harrison will travel to Sutton to take on the (3-1) Eagles of Braxton County, (3-1) Elkins will visit East-West Stadium to meet up with (4-1) Fairmont Senior, James Monroe (4-1) will make the trek to Summersville to go against the undefeated (4-0) Grizzlies of Nicholas County and (4-1) Weir will travel to Belmont, Ohio to battle the undefeated (4-0) Jets of Union Local.  In Class A, undefeated (4-0) Madonna will host the (4-2) Mustangs of Mathews High from Vienna, Ohio, (2-3) Williamstown will try to keep the winning going as they travel to take on undefeated (3-0) St. Marys and Wheeling Central (2-2) and winners of two in a row will face the always tough and city rival Cadets of Linsly who stand at (4-1)!
