Yeager, W.Va. National Guard to host 70th anniversary airshow

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Final preparations are being made for this weekend’s Airshow at Yeager Airport in Charleston.

Officials at Yeager Airport and the 130th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia National Guard will celebrate its 70th anniversary by hosting a free airshow Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s going to be a fun family event, so bring your kids. Grandparents can bring their grandchildren. We’re just planning for a fun day,” said Paige Butcher, marketing assistant at Yeager Airport.

Airshow tours start Wednesday for about 150 students from Boone and Kanawha County. More than 40 planes will start arriving at the airport Thursday.

Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The airshow will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.

Limited parking will be available on the airfield to those with small children under the age of 5. Offsite parking is available at the State Capitol Complex and Capital High School. A shuttle bus will transport people to the entry gate.

This will be the first airshow Yeager has hosted in Charleston since the early 2000s. Butcher said the event is about bringing the community together.

“We want to become more involved with our community and get our community more involved with Yeager Airport, so we are very excited for this event,” she said.

People can expect to see dozens of World War II aircraft, active duty military aircraft and much more.

Yeager’s air show will also feature “The Faces of Flight” — a display that highlights people involved with Charleston aviation dating back to the 1920s.

For more information about the airshow, visit Yeager’s event pages on their website or on Facebook.
