Kanawha County murder case to go before grand jury

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The case of a Kanawha County man accused of murdering his wife will go before a grand jury.

Randall Todd Chapman, 47, of Big Chimney, claimed his wife Shirlene Young had killed herself when Kanawha County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at his home on Sept. 16. He added he went to sleep and woke up to find his wife dead in the living room.

Investigators said an examination of Young’s body determined she had been shot in the back. The state Medical Examiner added the death was the result of a homicide.

A detective told the court Tuesday Chapman smelled like alcohol, and he admitted to drinking with Young earlier in the day.

Chapman remains at South Central Regional Jail without bond.
