Wheeling Park’s Holmstrand named AARP Scholar Athlete of the Week

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Allison Holmstrand of Wheeling Park High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 1.

A senior, Holmstrand is a 4.8 g.p.a. AP Honors student. She is a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, Drug Free Clubs of America and the Wheeling Park Orchestra. Allison has participated in the Governor’s Honors Academy, Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program, Math Field Day, and Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Math and Science (TEAMS) state competitions.

Patriots’ two-sport student athlete earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor.

She has received the Ohio County Stifel Award for academic achievement each year as a Wheeling Park student. Allison is the daughter of Jeff and Linda Holmstrand of Wheeling.

Holmstrand is a four-year varsity runner and swimmer at Wheeling Park. She is a team captain of the Patriots swim team, and has been an individual qualifier in three consecutive WVSSAC state swimming championship meets.

She was a state qualifier in the 500 meter freestyle as a freshman, and state qualifier in the 100 meter backstroke as both a sophomore and junior. Holmstrand helped her Wheeling Park Cross Country team qualify for the 2016 WVSSAC State Cross Country Championship meet, and hopes to again qualify for the state meet this season.

On a community level, Holmstrand is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Wheeling area. She serves as a volunteer with the Wheeling Symphony, the Oglebay Zoo, and the Salvation Army. She is a member of Stone Presbyeterian Church, where she is active in the youth group. She also serves as a Freshman Mentor at Wheeling Park High School.

Holmstrand is still considering her college options, and plans to major in business.

During the 2017 fall sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award.
