MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Sure, this is a college sports feature, but when a gift like Tom Petty leaves us, we pause to recognize. We got lucky with this guy.

You want to talk staying power? He had his first top 50 hit in 1977, two years before Don Nehlen became West Virginia’s coach. In the decades that followed, Petty never stopped reminding us there was a little more to life.
