Sentencing postponed in Randolph County case involving trooper

ELKINS, W.Va. — Sentencing was postponed Wednesday for a Randolph County man convicted earlier this year on various charges including an attack on a state police trooper.

A judge postponed the sentencing for Nathaniel Wegman until Oct. 18 while a post-trial motion is considered.

Wegman tried to drown Trooper First Class J.J. Cornelius, who was attempting to take Wegman into custody in a March 2016 incident. Wegman had a warrant against him for an outstanding felony charge from another state and was wanted for questioning on a Randolph County robbery.

According to prosecutors, Cornelius had to fight off Wegman with a knife as Wegman was holding his head below water.

Wegman was convicted on charges of attempted murder, malicious assault and fleeing in an incident.
