PETERSBURG, W.Va. — The fire in the Monongahela National Forest has grown to 180 acres, an increase from 100 acres on Saturday, because of warm and dry weather.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, 120 firefighters are tending to the fire, and one helicopter is in use.
“Because the fire is burning through the thick layer of vegetation, known as the duff layer, firefighters are having to use a variety of tools to dig line instead of the typical leaf blowers,” a statement said.
The U.S. Forest Service said 30 percent of the fire is contained.
Reduced fire activity is expected on Sunday because of increased humidity.
The fire has caused the closure of a large portion of the North Fork Mountain Trail, the entire Landis Trail, the entire Redman Run Trail and FR742 and FR214A. A temporary flight restriction is also in place.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
