Semi crash kills one and slows traffic in Kanawha County

DUNBAR, W.Va. — A truck driver is dead after a late night crash on Interstate 64 in Kanawha County.

The driver lost control around 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday headed west on I-64 near the Dunbar exit. The semi, hauling frozen chickens, crashed over an embankment. The driver was killed.

Crews spent much of the night working to remove the wreckage and expect it will be noon before the entire area is cleared.

Authorities say both the trailer and cab went over a retaining wall and down the embankment. The trailer landed on top of the cab and trapped the driver inside. It took rescue crews and extended period of time to get to him in the wreckage. His name has not been released.

Authorities are unsure what may have caused the crash. A witness told authorities he saw the semi crossing several lanes of traffic just before the crash. It’s unknown if speed or wet road conditions may have played a role in the accident.
