SSAC announces new premier award: MVB Bank Champions Cup

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. – The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) announces the launch of its new premier award, the MVB Bank Champions Cup, which will recognize the top performing high schools in the state for their overall athletic and academic achievement.

“We are happy to announce the MVB Bank Champions Cup to recognize the outstanding academic and athletic achievements of our high schools,” said WVSSAC executive director Bernie Dolan. “We have so many student-athletes who excel in both the classroom and on the field, court, track and pool. This is one more way to bring attention to their accomplishments.”

The comprehensive all-sports award – sponsored by MVB Bank – will be presented to the overall boys’ and overall girls’ athletic programs in Class A, Class AA and Class AAA. A total of six MVB Bank Champions Cups will be awarded each academic year, beginning this spring.

“As a strong community bank, MVB Bank believes in the future of our state and the unlimited potential of our student-athletes, who in turn give back to our communities,” said Larry F. Mazza, President and CEO, MVB Financial Corp. “Our high schools provide the foundation youth need to grow and succeed in life.

“We look forward to the launch of the MVB Bank Champions Cup as a way to recognize and encourage their ongoing quest for excellence,” he continued. “Our partnership with the WVSSAC is a win for everyone involved.”

The recipients of the MVB Bank Champions Cups will be selected by a point system that will reward the top eight finishers in each state championship sponsored by the WVSSAC.

Points are earned by finishing first (100), second (97), third (95), fourth (93), fifth (91), sixth (89), seventh (87) and eighth (85). Additional points are earned for the graduation rate of each school: 100%-97% (100 points), 96.99%-94% (97), 93.99%-91% (95), 90.99%-88% (93), 87.99%-85% (91), 84.99%-82% (89), 81.99%-79% (87) and 78.99%-76% (85).

Throughout the academic year, updates will be given on the rankings in the race for the MVB Bank Champions Cups.

The first points of the year are awarded based on the 2017-18 golf championships that concluded Oct. 4 at Oglebay Park in Wheeling. Washington, Wyoming East and Ravenswood captured the three state golf championships.
