SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Huntington software development company executive says the firm is looking to close the skills gap when it comes to hiring people for technology and coding jobs in West Virginia.
“We’re hiring a lot of talent right out of school — out of four year college, out of two year community and technical college — and they have a great foundation and they’ve been able to prove through getting that degree that they have the aptitude, but there’s still a gap in things that we need to teach them, so that they can do actual client work,” said Lee Farabaugh, co-founder and CEO of Core10.
Core10, based out of Huntington, was among several companies represented at the TechConnect WV Coding & Cyber Summit Thursday. The event was held at BridgeValley Community & Technical College’s Advanced Technology Center in South Charleston.
The summit focused on steps being taken to train a new high-tech workforce, discuss employment opportunities for computer coding and cyber security and the benefits of working in the new virtual tech economy and workplace.
U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) headlined the event.
Thousands of jobs are currently open in the tech field. Core10 is looking to add to its workforce, Farabaugh said.
“We’re looking for people who have an aptitude for software development, for coding. They don’t necessarily have to have a ton of experience, but we found that if they have the capacity, then they can learn,” she said.
Core10 hopes to hire 135 new employees by 2020. Currently, the company employs only 15 people.
The company assists with software development with a focus on financial technology.
Farabaugh said they may need to hire people from out-of-state.
“One of our biggest concerns is are there truly enough people? I think we all have to work together to build training opportunities that make sense across multiple companies and even multiple industries within technology. We all have to understand that we’re probably going to need to bring people in,” she said.
For those interested in learning more about job opportunities at Core10, Farabaugh said they can log onto core10.io.
