First trial in coal executive death to begin Monday

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — The trial for one of the men accused of murdering a coal executive is scheduled to start Monday morning in Williamson.

Anthony Arriaga, 22, of Gibonsburg, Ohio, allegedly conspired with Brandon Fitzpatrick, 19, of Louisa, Ky., to steal the Denali SUV of Ben Hatfield in May 2016 while he was at Mountain View Memory Gardens in Maher.

Hatfield, whose career included time as an executive at ICG, Massey and Patriot Coal, was cleaning the grave plots of his wife and her parents when he was shot by Arriaga, authorities allege.

Arriaga entered a guilty plea in April but was allowed to withdraw it in June. His trial was set to begin Sept. 25 but was pushed back. Jury selection is set to start at 9 a.m. Monday.

Fitzpatrick’s trial will begin after Arriaga’s trial concludes.
