Kanawha County school briefly on lockdown after knife-welding man spotted

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man was arrested Tuesday after an alleged disturbance that involved a knife, Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies said.

Tommy Athens, 36, was across the road from Anne Bailey Elementary School when deputies were called. The school was put on lockdown for about 11 minutes as a precautionary measure. Neither the students nor the staff were part of the incident, deputies said.

Athens was charged with brandishing a deadly weapon along with a two other misdemeanors from crimes allegedly committed Monday involving destruction of property and larceny.

Athens was arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court and sent to the South Central Regional Jail.
