Judge grants continuance in Marcus Simms’ DUI case

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University football player Marcus Simms won’t appear in court again until April 2018 on a pending DUI charge.

Simms, 19, was arrested in August after a Monongalia County sheriff’s deputy pulled him over and smelled marijuana inside the vehicle. The deputy reported Simms had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech and failed sobriety tests after admitting he had smoked marijuana.

In a 10-minute hearing Thursday, Simms’ attorney Dave Jecklin filed a motion for continuance, which was granted by a Monongalia County magistrate.

Simms served a one-game team imposed suspension to open this season, missing West Virginia’s 31-24 loss to Virginia Tech. He subsequently returned to the starting lineup and has caught 17 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns.

Charges against Simms for a previous DUI in his home state of Maryland were dismissed, meaning he won’t face serious penalties in West Virginia for a second-offense DUI.
