Appalachia Service Project to recognize flood recovery partners at The Greenbrier

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The Appalachia Service Project will be around for at least another year to rebuild homes in Greenbrier County following the June 2016 Flood.

“Our hope is that we’ll be committed in this area where we’ve been until the job is done,” said Melisa Miller, executive vice president of ASP, ahead of a Friday event to recognize their partners in the flood recovery effort.

The event is taking place at 6 p.m. Friday at The Greenbrier.

“It’s both to support the efforts, but also to celebrate what has already been done,” Miller said.

Since Sept. 2016, the ASP has rebuilt about 50 families for flood victims in the county. Miller said that’s not even half of the work they still have left to do. They plan to rebuild at least 50 more homes.

“We will build as long as we can have the funds and people and heart to do it,” she said.

Families have lost everything and it’s their job to give back, Miller said.

“It’s not just numbers on a page or statistics of homes that were affected. These are our friends, family members and community members that we’ve come to care about that don’t have safe places to live because of one tragic event. For us, it’s everything. This is what humanity is about,” she said.

Volunteers are still needed. Those looking to donate their time to the project should log on to asphome.org.

The following organizations will be honored at Friday ceremony:

Christian Aid Ministries
Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief
Neighbors Loving Neighbors
Homes for White Sulphur Springs
United Way of Greenbrier Valley
FHLBank Pittsburgh
Homes for West Virginia
Cales Foundation
Mullican Flooring
Solid Rock Carpenters
Greater Greenbrier Long-Term Recovery Committee
Mayor Andy Pendleton
John Crandall
Mike Hodge
Red Star Home Supply
Zeb Volpe

Governor Jim Justice is expected to be on hand for the event.
