Mountaineers coast to charity win over Albany, 98-67

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Lamonte West scored 26 points in 18 minutes and West Virginia’s press created its usual ruckus in a 98-67 exhibition win over Albany on Saturday night.

The game raised more than $27,000 for Red Cross hurricane relief with some 5,147 fans in attendance

West sank 5-of-9 from 3-point range, while reserve guard Beetle Bolden was 4-of-7 from deep in adding 16 points.

All-Big 12 preseason pick Jevon Carter produced 15 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Mountaineers, who forced 24 turnovers.

BOXSCORE: West Virginia 98, Albany 67

Freshman Teddy Allen scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half when West Virginia built a 47-29 margin.

West Virginia shot 41 percent from the floor and 13-of-35 (37 percent) from 3-point range.

“I thought we shot way too many 3s,” said Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins. “More than half of our shot attempts in the first half were 3s and that’s way too many.”

Travis Charles had 15 points and seven rebounds for Albany, which was picked second in the America East Conference and returns its top five scorers from last season’s 21-14 team.

The Danes managed 38 percent shooting and were outrebounded 46-37.

Junior college transfer Wesley Harris finished with seven points and eight rebounds for the Mountaineers but also joined West, Sagaba Konate and Allen in fouling out. Each team committed 28 fouls, leading to 73 combined free throws.
