ONA, W.Va. — The cross country state championship meet was held over the weekend from Cabell Midland High School.
Ripley’s Tori Starcher won the Class AAA girls 5k individual championship with a time of 17:35.
“I’m so happy about it,” she said. “I didn’t know how the race was going to play out, but it played into my favor and I’m happy with how it went. I like to be a front-runner, so I just tried to hold a lead and when I could make my move, I was going to go. Words can’t describe it.”
Chris Barbera of Woodrow Wilson won the Class AAA boys individual 5k championship with a time of 15:39.
The Class AA-A girls individual championship was won by Jessica Melvin of Philip Barbour with a time of 18:57, while the AA-A boys individual champion was won by Winfield’s Aaron Withrow at 16:09.
“I just wanted to come out here, be focused and stay loose,” Withrow said. “I looked back coming down the hill and didn’t see anyone (behind me) – I knew then that I was going to do it. I just kept thinking about all of the 14-16 mile runs that I did this summer. It feels great, especially after losing and getting second last year.”
