Capital edges George Washington, AAA playoff field takes shape

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Capital finished the regular season with a 24-13 win over George Washington on Friday night in a game that was tied 10-10 at the break.

Quarterback Kerry Martin totaled 350 yards of offense in the win for the Cougars, who improved to 7-3.

“We let them hang around, but we fought and we won – that’s all that matters,” said Capital coach Jon Carpenter. “Our defense did a good job.”

George Washington, which fell to 5-5, was led by quarterback Grant Wells who threw for 269 yards in the loss.

Heading into Friday, 15 of the 16 Class AAA playoff seeds were set with St. Albans, South Charleston and Parkersburg South vying for the final spot. St. Albans fell to Hurricane 38-28, Parkersburg South lost to Parkersburg 27-24 as South Charleston grabbed the final playoff spot with a 13-10 win over Beckley.

Official playoff pairings and seedings will be released on Saturday by the WVSSAC, with dates and times set on Sunday from Parkersburg.
