Capito takes part in Senate GOP tax reform press conference

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) says she’s confident the Senate can pass a tax reform bill by the end of the year.

“I think we’re as united as I’ve seen us and that to me is why I think the aspirations to have this passed in the next several weeks are very much on target,” Capito said during a Tuesday morning press conference in Washington.

Capito joined Republican senators and tax reform advocates for a press conference to highlight the need for tax reform and the impact it will have on American families, small businesses and the economy.

In August, Capito hosted U.S. Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin in West Virginia for a roundtable discussion with small business owners. She said Tuesday the enthusiasm of West Virginia’s small business owners cannot be overstated.

During that discussion, Capito said small business owners were asked what they would do if they received a tax cut.

“First one says I would raise the wages of everybody who works here because I can’t do it now and I lost my best workers,” Captio said.

Another owner said she would hire more people if she received a tax break.

“She’s going to invest in more IT. She’s in advertising. Invest in more IT, modernize, to bring more business into her small business so she can hire the four people that she really needs to move forward. That’s more jobs,” Capito said.

Kellyanne Conway, counselor to President Donald Trump, told reporters she wants Democrats to get on board with tax reform and that “we welcome their support.”

Representatives from the National Taxpayers Union, Americans for Tax Reform, Heritage Action and Americans for Prosperity were part of Tuesday’s press event.
