Argument leads to stabbing death in McDowell County

KIMBALL, W.Va. — An argument over drugs is believed to be the catalyst for murder in McDowell County.

State Police say John Thompson, 45, of Kimball suffered a fatal stab wound just before 8 p.m. Tuesday night in an argument with his roommate Roy Phillips, 42. of Kimball.

“We believe they were arguing over drugs,” said Senior Trooper Eric Boothe. “We’re under the impression that they were under the influence of alcohol and drugs.”

Thompson was taken to Welch community hospital where he died of of his injuries. He was stabbed with a six inch dagger.

“It was a fixed blade,” said Boothe of the unusual weapon. “It’s not something you typically carry on you.”

Nobody beside the suspect and victim were at the home when the incident occurred. Phillips was arraigned before a McDowell County magistrate Wednesday and is jailed without bond on a first degree murder charge.
