PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — Class AAA No. 10 John Marshall won for the first time in the playoffs since 1996 with a 42-35 victory over No. 7 Parkersburg on Friday night.
It was the first playoff appearance for the Monarchs (8-3) since 2007.
“Our kids played well on both sides of the ball and it was just great to get (the win) after all of this time,” said John Marshall coach Rick Goodrich. “The kids were very excited and rightfully so. I told them to enjoy the moment and soak it all in.”
John Marshall capitalized on three Parkersburg turnovers, converting all of those opportunities into points.
Charles McCool tallied 249 yards rushing in the win for the Monarchs, while Nick Coulter added 159 yards. Kam Mace threw for 325 yards in the loss for Parkersburg (7-4).
Up next for John Marshall is a trip to No. 2 Martinsburg in the quarterfinals – a game Goodrich said will be played on Friday night.
“We’re realistic with what we have next week, but we’re just fortunate that we get to go play – that’s better than the alternative,” Goodrich said. “We’re just glad to be a part of it and to live on for another week. Why not us? We’ll go over and it will be a great measuring stick as to where we’re at.”
