Farmington No. 9 explosion to be remembered Sunday

MANNINGTON, W.Va. — The victims of the 1968 Farmington Number 9 explosion will be remembered in the annual service Sunday at the Flat Rock Memorial in Marion County, the United Mine Workers Union of America announced.

The 1968 explosion at Consolidation Coal’s No. 9 Mine in Marion County killed 78 coal miners.

The tragedy at the Consolidation Coal-owned mine killed 78 miners. The bodies of 19 of those miners were never recovered because of the severity of the explosion and fire. The mine was sealed.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon Flat Run Memorial just north of Mannington of U.S. Route 250.

UMWA International Secretary-Treasurer Levi Allen will be the keynote speaker.
