CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Clay Skovron of East Hardy High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of November 26.
A senior, Skovron is a 3.8 g.p.a. student. He serves as Pep Club President and is active in Future Farmers of America. Clay is the son of Eric and Jennifer Skovron of Lost City.
Skovron is a four-year member of Coach Chad Williams Cougars’ football program, where he has been part of four state playoff teams and two WV Class A state runner-up squads.
He earned Class A All-State honors as a junior, playing at wide receiver and linebacker. As the Cougars’ starting quarterback this season, Skovron has passed for more than 2,600 yards and has scored a combined 44 touchdowns through the air and on the ground.
A three-year member of the Cougars’ baseball team, Skovron earned Class A All-State honors as a junior. He also was a two-year member of East Hardy’s boys basketball program.
On a community level, Skovron is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Hardy County area. He serves as a volunteer with the East Hardy Little League football and baseball programs, as well as the East Hardy Middle School athletic programs.
Skovron also volunteers in his community, assisting elderly neighbors with regular chores and tasks.
Skovron is undecided on a college choice, and plans to pursue a degree in agricultural studies.
During the 2017 fall sports season, one high school student athlete has been selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.
West Virginia student athletes in grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. The deadline for nominations for the 2017 Scholar Athlete program has closed.
