Fairmont Senior beats No. 1 Mingo for return to AA title game

MATEWAN, W.Va. — Class AA No. 4 Fairmont Senior turned the tables on No. 1 Mingo Central in Saturday’s semifinal matchup, beating the defending state champion Miners 35-6.

The win avenged last year’s 25-point loss to Mingo Central in the Class AA title game.

Fairmont Senior (12-1) limited Mingo Central quarterback Jeremy Dillon to just 17-of-33 passing for 147 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Dillon ran for 110 yards and a score for the Miners (12-1).

Polar Bears quarterback Connor Neal threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 12-of-17 passing, while Bryson Gilbert added 112 rushing yards on 17 carries. Caleb Walker caught one touchdown and ran for two more.

Fairmont Senior defeated Mingo Central 35-6 in the Class AA semifinals.

Gilbert collected a 65-yard pick-six in the third quarter, giving the Polar Bears complete control, 20-6.

Fairmont Senior added two more scores in the fourth quarter, blowing the game open

Fairmont Senior will face undefeated and No. 2 Bluefield on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. from Wheeling Island Stadium for the Class AA title.
