IVYDALE, W.Va. — State Police say a home invasion in Calhoun County on Tuesday morning left an elderly man dead, but he didn’t go without a fight.
The body of Eugene Stevens, 77, was found at his home on Big Bend Road near Grantsville Tuesday evening. Troopers were already investigating after Tony Boggs of Stinson, was dropped off at Minnie Hamilton Hospital in Grantsville early that morning.
“We got a call that an individual had been dumped at the hospital with gunshot wounds,” said Trooper T.D. McFeeley. “Through our investigation we revealed he was involved in a home invasion.”
Initially, troopers though the individual dropped at the hospital was the victim until Stevens’ body was discovered. Troopers charges Boggs in connection with the murder Thursday evening with charges against other suspects pending.
“It was all on security footage and it all went extremely wrong,” McFeeley said. “I don’t think they took anything because of the exchange of gunfire. I don’t think they planned on getting shot at.”
Stevens apparently opened fire when the four broke into his home and was shot during an exchange of gunfire along with the individual dropped off at the hospital.
