TOLEDO, Ohio — Marshall closed the game on a 14-0 run, including C.J. Burks’ last-minute steal and dunk that provided the go-ahead points in a 93-87 win at Toledo on Saturday night.
Jon Elmore finished with 25 points and eight rebounds for Marshall (7-3), while Ajdin Penava had 24 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and four steals.
Tre’Shaun Fletcher scored 31 points for Toledo (5-4), including free throws to give the Rockets an 87-79 edge with 2:59 to play. Within a 40 seconds, Penava converted a three-point play. The duo added a layup each and tied it at 87-87 with 55 seconds to play.
“We gave the fans their money’s worth tonight,” Marshall coach Dan D’Antoni said. “The defense came around at the right time. Jarrod West was getting into their players and forcing mistakes. Ajdin Penava came up big for us twice with his blocks. C.J. made that big steal. These guys have been working hard and we are going to get better down the road.”
