Charleston police identify murder victim

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police are in the early stages of a murder investigation from the weekend in the Capital City.

Joann Short

“An autopsy is being performed today and I wouldn’t want to speculate on a time of death,” said Charleston Police Chief Steve Cooper. “At this time I wouldn’t want to speculate on manner of death or what type of murder we’re looking at. What I can say is that we’re clearly looking at a homicide.”

The victim is identified as Joann Short, 46, of Charleston. Police said she was found dead of a gunshot wound on Saturday night.

“The Charleston police was very familiar with Miss Short,” said Cooper.

Short’s body was discovered Saturday night around midnight on Coleman Street just off Twilight Drive. The body was in a wooded area in the neighborhood when someone living in the area was walking through the woods.

It’s the second murder in recent days in Charleston. Terrell Davenport died of gunshot wounds last week. Police are looking for two men, both from Detroit, who have been charged with the murder.
