North-South football coaches set, game moved to new date, venue

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Coaches have been announced this week for the annual North-South Football Classic coming up in June.

Brad Jett of South Harrison High School will lead the North Bears. He has served as the Hawks’ head football coach since 1998. His teams have qualified for the Class A playoffs in 10 seasons. Jett has won multiple coach of the year awards throughout his 20 seasons at South Harrison.

John Mustain of James Monroe High School will guide the South Cardinals. He has been head football coach of the Mavericks since 2013. He led James Monroe to three Class AA playoff appearances and qualified for the state semifinals in 2016. Mustain is the former girls basketball head coach at James Monroe that captured the 2002 Class AA state championship.

The 2018 North-South Football Classic will be moved up a weekend and change locations.

The game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, June 9 at South Charleston High School.

The date is a week earlier to avoid coaching staff conflicts of the three-week June practice window for WVSSAC member schools. The traditional location, University of Charleston Stadium/Laidley Field was not available on June 9.

“South Charleston wanted the North-South Football Classic and will make it a great event,” said game director Bob Mullett. “We are excited to work with South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullins and South Charleston High School,”
