Southern Regional Jail officer attacked by inmate

BEAVER, W.Va. — A correctional officer at Southern Regional Jail is recovering after being attacked by an inmate Tuesday.

A criminal complaint from Raleigh County Magistrate Court reads that inmate Jonathan Jackson is accused of the attack. The officer, whose name is being withheld, is still recovering as of Thursday.

According to the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, both Secretary Jeff Sandy and Regional Director David Farmer have been in touch with the injured officer during recovery. Farmer also visited Southern Regional Jail Wednesday to check on staff and conditions.

This incident comes just under a week after Governor Jim Justice declared a state of emergency in regard to a shortage in corrections staffing.
