Explosion creates stir in Mineral County community

ROCKET CENTER, W.Va. — The sound of an explosion at the Allegheny Ballistics Lab in Mineral County created concern among neighbors on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mineral County 911 center received three calls about the incident, but a check with the plant revealed no problems.

Melissa Sheets, Public Information Officer with Orbital ATK, tells MetroNews the sound was an explosion which resulted from a routine burning of waste product on the site. The company said there was no damage and nobody was injured.

“It was a routine day for us, but it must have made a sound which scared some of our neighbors and for that we do apologize,” Sheets said from her Baltimore office.

The facility produces a number of highly explosive products and ordinance for the U.S. Military.
