BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — A federal district judge sentenced a former funeral director to 13 months in federal prison in connection to defrauding an insurance company.
Joel McGuire, 61, of Alderson, sold insurance policies that would pay for a clients’ funerals upon their death while simultaneously serving as ther funeral director at Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home in Union.
McGuire admitted to submitting false claims, receiving more than $50,000 as a result of his actions.
He previously pleaded guilty to wire fraud and was ordered to pay $50,200.18 in restitution.
