CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Seniors Brent Price and Owen Gainer combined for 49 points as Class A No. 1 Wheeling Central defeated No. 3 and defending state champion Notre Dame 80-60.
“Notre Dame is good and we knew that coming down here,” said Central Catholic coach Mel Stephens. “They did some things inside early in the game and we made a little adjustment, which seemed to work.”
Price led the Maroon Knights (9-1) with 28 points, while Gainer added 21, hitting five shots from 3. Bray Price also finished in double figures for Wheeling Central, scoring 16 points in the win.
“Brent and Owen both are pretty good at being able to get their points,” Stephens said. “We had 40 points at halftime and we really hadn’t run much of an offense, it was basically those two just creating their own shots. It’s nice to have guys who have that ability.”
Gabe Zummo scored 30 points to lead Notre Dame (5-3) in the loss, followed by Todd Griffith’s 14 points and Jared Fagan’s 12 points.
