Messy weather headed to W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The weather over the next two days is going to be a mess in West Virginia. The Charleston Weather Bureau issued a hazardous weather outlook for Friday into the weekend covering the mid-Ohio Valley and parts of central West Virginia. The Weather Service issued a companion flood watch for much of the state for Thursday night into Friday morning with anticipated heavy rain.

“We’re going to have a pretty good low pressure system move up over the Appalachian Mountains in the next 24 hours,” said Meteorologist Tony Edwards with the National Weather Service in Charleston. “It’s going to bring us a wide range of weather.”

The weather will start as rain, possibly dumping one to two inches or more in some parts of the state, particularly the Ohio River valley.  But temperatures on Friday will tumble below freezing. Much of the rainfall will turn to a wintry mix and eventually all snow. However,  the complicated system made it difficult for Edwards and other forecasters to give a solid estimate on accumulation totals.

“We’re still trying to figure hat out,” he told MetroNews Thursday. “It’s going to be complex with different precipitation types, so nailing down accumulation at this time is really difficult.”

He did suggest the rainfall in the next 24 hour could top an inch or more especially in the Ohio River Valley. The colder air will arrive Friday and will change the weather again through the weekend.

“It’s certainly going to be a mess and I think the important thing to know is there will be some travel impacts, even getting into the day on Saturday.” he explained.
