One dead, one still missing after heavy rain and high water in Wood County

WOOD COUNTY, W.Va. — One person has died and, as of Saturday morning, one person was still missing in high water in Wood County.

The body of Topanga Smith, 18, of Waverly, was recovered from a vehicle on Laurel Creek near Parkersburg on Friday afternoon, according to deputies with the Wood County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators said the vehicle she was in was swept away in high water on Friday morning.

Parts of Wood County were under flood warnings from the National Weather Service at the time due to heavy rain.

The search for the second person in the vehicle, believed to be the driver, was suspended on late Friday afternoon partly because of the weather.

As of Saturday morning, there was no word on when the search for the second missing person would resume.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow was scheduled to continue until at least 10 a.m. Saturday in Wood County.
