NORFOLK, Va. — Marshall trimmed a 23-point deficit to two in the final minute but couldn’t finish off the comeback during an 82-76 loss at Old Dominion on Saturday night.
Guard C.J. Burks scored a game-high 24 points, while Jon Elmore added 18 points and seven assists for the Herd (12-6, 3-2 in C-USA), which used a 50-point second half to make the game tight.
“I’m proud of the way we fought,” Marsahall coach Dan D’Antoni said. “There were maybe one of two mistakes that if we turn those around, we are looking at a win.”
B.J. Stith had 20 points to lead Old Dominion (13-4, 4-1), while Trey Porter finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Ahmad Caver went for 15 points and eight assists, and Brandan Stith added 14 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and four steals.
“At times we played really well tonight,” said ODU coach Jeff Jones. “We made it a little tougher than we needed to, but Marshall is a handful and never stops attacking.”
Marshall shot 33 percent in the first half and fell behind 40-26.
“They’re a good defensive ball club,” D’Antoni said. “I told them to move the ball more at halftime, so we could get off better shots and we did that.”
The Herd returns to the Henderson Center to face Middle Tennessee State on Thursday.
