Stephens scores 24 points as Musselman edges Morgantown

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — VMI signee and 6-foot-9 standout center Jake Stephens led all scorers with 24 points as Musselman defeated Morgantown 56-55 in the MLK Invitational on Monday.

“It’s always good to get a win,” Stephens said. “Morgantown is a first-class program and they got us last year. We knew we had to come out here focused. This was big for us. They had some big strong guys, so I had to get lower and post up.”

Plagued by turnovers early, Musselman trailed 32-27 at the half.

“We just calmed down in the second half,” Stephens said. “We had 14 turnovers. We just had to calm down a little bit and play our game.”

Taralle Hayden added 14 points for Musselman.

The Applemen (8-3) won their sixth straight as they break in four new starters.

“I think we’re growing up,”  said Musselman coach Derek Basile. “In the beginning of the year, we were tinkering with what we wanted to do and how we wanted to play – we kind of have that figured out and have the rotation figured out,” he continued. “We’re playing a tough schedule, but we’re grinding out wins and we’re grinding out tough wins. I like how we’re playing.”

Up next for Musselman is another challenge against Martinsburg on Friday.

Cam Selders led the Mohigans (5-5) with 15 points, while Jayron Wilson added 14.
