Violent weekend in Charleston involves shootings, stabbings

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston police have made a few arrests and are still looking for suspects in connection with a number of violent crimes in the city this weekend.

Police Chief Steve Cooper said there were eight incidents within a 36 hour period which involved shootings and stabbings mainly on the city’s West Side.

“It was an extremely busy weekend,” Cooper said on Monday’s “580 Live” with Mayor Danny Jones heard on MetroNews affiliate 580-WCHS.

Cooper said, fortunately, no one was killed, but four people were injured. Everyone that was hurt is expected to survive.

This weekend’s violence all started at around 10 p.m. Friday in the 1400 block of Livingston Avenue. Police said Shane Turpin, 29, heard a few gun shots while walking along the street. A bullet grazed Turpin’s head. He suffered minor injuries. Police are looking for the shooter.

About three hours later, police were called to the 500 block of Park Avenue where two parked cars were shot up. No one was hurt. Cooper said they believe the intended target was Isaac Bowen. His car was shot up and another parked car that was struck by gunfire. Police are searching for a suspect.

A man was shot in the leg at a home in the 600 block of Grant Avenue early Saturday afternoon. The homeowner, Shawn Hall, 51, allegedly shot Frank Gravely, 28, for not leaving his house when he was asked to.

“He (Hall) had allowed him to stay there. He (Gravely), apparently, wore out his welcome and he asked him to leave. It turned into an altercation with Mr. Hall, the owner of the property, shot Mr. Gravely in the leg with a shot gun,” Cooper said.

Hall was charged with malicious wounding, a felony.

At around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, police said 13 shots were fired in the area of Maryland Avenue and Lee Street West. Cooper said it’s unknown who the intended target was in the shooting. Witnesses said a light colored car was seen speeding toward the Kanawha Boulevard.

Cooper said a number of shots were also fired in the Lewis Street area Saturday afternoon, but no one was hurt.

Police are looking for David Woods who allegedly stabbed a man in the face, arm and side. It happened at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1900 block of 4th Avenue. William Thomas was stabbed during an altercation between the two. A malicious wounding warrant is out for Woods. Police said Woods is homeless and does not have an address.

Police are looking for Sarah Taylor, 31, of Charleston, in connection with a Sunday shooting.

At around 2 a.m. Sunday, a man was shot in the face and shoulder along Red Oak Street. Billy Fields, 32, had his vehicle stolen in that area and then he was shot. His injuries are not life-threatening. Cooper said Richard Dangott, 24, of Charleston, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, kidnapping and first degree robbery. Police are also looking for Sarah Taylor, 31, of Charleston, who faces the same charges.

The latest incident happened Sunday night. A house in the 1700 block of Kemp Avenue was shot up. Cooper said about 10 shots were fired and nearly 8 of those shots hit the house. No one was hurt.
