Man who tried to run over Fairmont police officer among 28 indicted in Marion County

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — 28 people, including one man charged with attempted murder and another shot by a Fairmont police officer, are under indictment by the Marion County Grand Jury.

Stephen Anthony Haller, 50, of Fairmont, was indicted on charges of grand larceny and receiving or transferring stolen goods. Haller was involved in a police shooting in June 2016. An officer shot Haller after Haller reportedly attempted to ram the officer with a vehicle during the altercation.

John Henry Strother, Jr., 31, of Fairmont, faces one count of attempted first degree murder.

Also indicted, a Fairmont man accused on multiple counts of sexual abusing his biological grandchild. James Ray Hess, 71, of Fairmont, is charged with sexual abuse in the first degree and sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, or custodian.

The victim was allegedly an 8-year-old in Hess’ care.
