HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall never reached its preferred pace but pulled out a 76-66 win over Florida International behind Ajdin Penava’s 25 points and 14 rebounds on Thursday night.
In overcoming 19 turnovers, the Thundering Herd (16-8, 7-4) also got 22 points from Jon Elmore while improving to 13-1 at home this season
“It was an ugly win,” Elmore said. “I thought we struggled here and there.”
“We were a little stagnant. We didn’t necessarily hit a lot of shots. We executed well even though it wasn’t as fast as we usually play.”
Elmore sank 6-of-13 from 3-point range, grabbed six rebounds and dealt six assists.
Penava eclipsed 20 points for the first time since Dec. 22. The center shot 10-of-15 from the floor and blocked five shots.
“Penava is a competitor,” Marshall coach Dan D’Antoni said. “He wants to be really good.”
C.J. Burks added 16 for the Herd, which shot 48 percent.
Trejon Jacob scored 16 points off the bench for Panthers (11-14, 5-7), who pulled within 41-39 early in the second half before Elmore sank a series of 3s.
Josh Stamps scored 15 points and Eric Lockett 12 added 12 for FIU.
