Senate Pension Committee advances retirement system bill

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Senate Pension Committee voted Wednesday to advance a bill changing the state Teachers Retirement System, in which teachers would be considered absent while serving as an officer with a statewide professional teaching association.

The bill would not affect if an employee was placed on paid leave or special assignment by their employer.

No members would be considered absent if they were elected to the state Legislature or county commission, according to the bill.
